Cissus reduced (Body Mass Index) BMI 5-times greater than placebo.

Cissus reduced body weight 5-times greater than placebo.

Fat metabolites are products of fat degradation.

Following exercise or other fat “burning” process, fat tissue breaks down into small molecular components, including malondialdehyde (MDA), formaldehyde (FA), acetaldehyde (ACT) and acetone (ACON).

Increased urinary levels of fat metabolites indicates increased fat degradation or “burning.”

In laboratory studies, Cissus quadrangularis demonstrated lipase inhibition thereby blocking the absorption of unwanted dietary fats.

In vitro, Cissus quadrangularis demonstrated a-amylase inhibition thereby blocking the absorption of unwanted carbohydrates.

Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important part of muscle.

Creatinine levels will increase in the blood as a result of an increase in muscle mass.

Creatinine levels also vary according to a person's size and muscle mass.

Males have higher creatinine levels than females, generally due to increased muscle mass.

Athletes (body builders) also have increased creatinine levels due to increased muscle mass.

Cissus increased creatinine levels 4-times greater than placebo.

50 Human healthy adult male volunteers were selected and each was given 120 capsules each containing either 150mg of Cissus quadrangularis (standardized to 5% keto-steroids) or 150mg microcrystalline cellulose. The bottles were coded and randomly distributed amongst the volunteers. Each volunteer was prescribed 1 capsule TDS ½ hour before meals.

Blood was drawn from each volunteer at day 1 and basal rates of testosterone, LH and FSH were determined. The volunteers were then called back at day 30 and day 60 for a second round of blood assay. The results are presented below:

These results show that serum testosterone levels were increased nearly 4 times over the levels at the beginning of the study. The largest increase in testosterone occurred in the first 30 days of this study.

Serotonin (5-HT), a vital neurotransmitter, is involved in a wide range of behavioral functions in the body, including mood, sleep and appetite control.

Studies show that serotonin affects eating behavior and body weight. Increased plasma levels of serotonin are associated with decreased food intake, reduced weight gain and increased energy expenditure.

Another benefit of increasing serotonin levels may be in addressing many of the emotional issues overweight people face, including binge-eating and depression.

Cissus increased serotonin 3-times greater than placebo.

Cissus quadrangularis decreased cholesterol levels 20-times greater than placebo.

Cissus quadrangularis decreased triglycerides levels 6-times greater than placebo.

Cissus quadrangularis decreased LDL cholesterol levels 29-times greater than placebo.

Cissus quadrangularis increased HDL cholesterol levels 25-times greater than placebo.

Cissus decreased fasting blood glucose levels 3-times greater than placebo in obese individuals.

Cissus decreased fasting blood glucose levels 1.5-times greater than placebo in a normal individuals.

Cissus quadrangularis: Derived from the plant cissus quadrangularis linn.

According to a study, this androgenic phytosteroid has been shown to produce positive nitrogen balance increase in the plasma protein content and increase body weight [muscle mass] as well as increase the total weight of the testes in animals.

The study suggests it acts as an androgenic hormone and is more potent than methandrostenolone (Dianabol or Durabolin).

    CISSUS QUADRANGULARIS

    A healing phenomenon

Leverage performance science supplements will always be supported by science and qualified research. We are happy to provide

you with scientific and technical details as well as explain what each product will do for you in terms we can all understand.

    THE SCIENCE

Cissus quadrangularis is an ancient medicinal plant native to the hotter parts of Ceylon and India. It was prescribed in the

ancient Ayurvedic texts as a general tonic and analgesic, with specific bone fracture healing properties. Modern research has

shed light on Cissus' ability to speed bone healing by showing it acts as a glucocorticoid antagonist (1,2).

Since anabolic/androgenic compounds are well known to act as antagonists to the glucocorticoid receptor as well as promote bone growth and fracture healing, it has been postulated that Cissus possesses anabolic and/or androgenic properties (1,3).

In addition to speeding the remodeling process of the healing bone, Cissus also leads to a much faster increase in bone tensile strength. In clinical trials Cissus has led to a fracture healing time on the order of 55 to 33 percent of that of controls. That cissus exerts antiglucocorticoid properties is suggested by a number of studies where bones were weakend by treatment with cortisol, and upon administration of Cissus extract the cortisol induced weakening was halted, and the healing process began.

While the increased rate of bone healing may be of great significance to persons suffering from chronic diseases like osteoporosis (4), the antiglucocorticoid properties of Cissus are likely of much more interest to the average bodybuilder or athlete, since endogenous glucocorticoids, particularly cortisol, are not only catabolic to bone, but catabolize muscle
tissue as well. Numerous studies over the years have suggested that glucorticoids, including the body's endogenous hormone cortisol activate pathways that degrade not only bone, but skeletal muscle tissue as well.

A recently published report documented exactly how glucocorticoids (including cortisol) induce muscle breakdown: They activate the so-called ubiquitin-proteasome pathway of proteolysis (5). This pathway of tissue breakdown is important for removing damaged and non-functional proteins. However, when it is overactive during periods of elevated cortisol (e.g disease states, stress, and over-training) excess amounts of normal tissue are broken down as well. By exerting an anabolic, antiglucorticoid effect cissus helps preserve muscle tissue during times of physical and emotional stress.

Although the bulk of the research on Cissus centers around bone healing, the possibility exists that Cissus may act to improve bone healing and it may improve the healing rate of connective tissue in general, including tendons. If this is the case it would be of great benefit to bodybuilders and athletes.

Besides the above-mentioned properties of Cissus, the plant is also rich in the vitamins/antioxidants vitamin C and beta-carotene.

As analyzed, Cissus quadrangularis contained ascorbic acid 479 mg, and carotene 267 units per 100g of freshly prepared paste in addition to calcium oxalate (6).

The typical recommended daily dosage of Cissus is 3 to 6 grams to accelerate fracture healing. Safety studies in rats showed no toxic effects at dosages as high as 2000 mg/kg of body weight. So not only is Cissus efficacious [effective], it is also quite safe, in either the dried powder form or the commercially available extract.

Cissus also possess analgesic properties on a mg per mg basis comparable to aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.

Cissus quadrangularis, which has been proved to be highly effective in relieving pain, reduction of swelling and promoting the process of healing of the simple fractures as well as in curing the allied disorders associated with fractures (7).

The mechanism through which Cissus exerts its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties has not been well characterized. It may act centrally, but the anti-inflammatory features suggest that it acts by preventing the conversion of arachidonic acid to inflammatory prostaglandins.

    Real World Application for injuries

Simply if you are suffering from joint pain, ligament pain, cartilage pain, had surgery on bone, ligament or cartilage, Cissus is the supplement to use.

It has been my experience that many grapplers take anti-inflammatory medications to fight through the pain. Ultimately, these medications only kill the sensation of pain not the symptom. Cissus has the ability to kill the pain specific to the injury while promoting healing.

Some users will get instant relief and other will need to use Cissus for much longer period of time for complete healing of an injury. Leverage performance science is not claiming that Cissus will work 100% percent of the time that would be a foolish claim.

We have estimated that 85% of users experience relief from our product. This number may lower or rise as more consumers send in reports. In the PHARMACUETICAL industry a 50% success rate is good. Since we are talking about the Pharmaceutical industry, they have yet to produce a product that helps the healing process: They just develop pain edications that are often addicting.

THE OTHER SIDE EFFECT IS ANABOLIC!

Cissus is anabolic and anti-catabolic!!! Cissus users report a "PUMP" that we call the Cissus pump. The PUMP effect becomes prevalent at approximately 10-15 days of continous Cissus use. The "PUMP" is due to the increase of blood flow to the muscle.

The Cissus pump will have you flexing your muscle for no apparent reason. This is when you know the product has exerted its effect.

Cissus is a powerful natural anabolic; if not the most powerful natural anabolic on the market. Why would a grappler need it?

An Anabolic and anti-catabolic substance allows for faster recovery from exercise, from injury, increase in muscle strength,

and stamina. In short, you will be able to train longer and recover faster without the negative effects of anabolic steroids.

Cissus is also an ideal product to use in conjuntion with cAMPED for dropping weight.

Imagine decreasing bodyfat while simultaneously retaining your strength and preserving muscle mass while on a calorie restricted diet! The combined effects of Cissus and cAMPED become a powerful tool for any competive grappler!

    WARNING

If using Cissus to heal injury related pain, you may experience instant relief due to its analgesic (pain killing) effect.

This does not mean the injury has completely healed! Please continue your training regimen with extra caution until full recovery has been achieved. On the contrary, if using Cissus primarily for its Anabolic properties your training program should be continued with maximum intensity to reap the full benefits of this product.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of two formulations, Cissus quadrangularis-only and a Cissus quadrangularis/Irvingia gabonensis combination, on weight loss in overweight and obese human subjects. METHODS: The study was a 10 week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design involving 72 obese or overweight participants (45.8% male; 54.2% female; ages 21-44; mean age = 29.3). The participants were randomly divided into three equal (n = 24) groups: placebo, Cissus quadrangularis-only, and Cissus quadrangularis/Irvingia gabonensis combination. Capsules containing the placebo or active formulations were administered twice daily before meals; no major dietary changes nor exercises were suggested during the study. A total of six anthropomorphic and serological measurements (body weight, body fat, waist size; total plasma cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose level) were taken at baseline and at 4, 8 and 10 weeks. RESULTS: Compared to the placebo group, the two active groups showed a statistically significant difference on all six variables by week 10. The magnitude of the differences was noticeable by week 4 and continued to increase over the trial period. CONCLUSION: Although the Cissus quadrangularis-only group showed significant reductions on all variables compared to the placebo group, the Cissus quadrangularis/Irvingia gabonensis combination resulted in even larger reductions. This apparently synergistic formulation should prove helpful in the management of obesity and its related complications.

Laboratory of Nutrition and Nutritional Biochemistry, Department of Biochemistry, University of Yaounde I, Yaounde, Cameroon. juliusoben@hotmail.com

AIM: Obesity is generally linked to complications in lipid metabolism and oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of a proprietary extract of Cissus quadrangularis (CQR-300) to that of a proprietary formulation containing CQR-300 (CORE) on weight, blood lipids, and oxidative stress in overweight and obese people. METHODS: The first part of the study investigated the in vitro antioxidant properties of CQR-300 and CORE using 3 different methods, while the second part of the study was a double-blind placebo controlled design, involving initially 168 overweight and obese persons (38.7% males; 61.3% females; ages 19-54), of whom 153 completed the study. All participants received two daily doses of CQR-300, CORE, or placebo and were encouraged to maintain their normal levels of physical activity. Anthropometric measurements and blood sampling were done at the beginning and end of the study period.[b] RESULTS: CQR-300 as well as CORE exhibited antioxidant properties in vitro. They also acted as in vivo antioxidants, bringing about significant (p <0>30) participants were randomized into three groups; placebo, formulation/no diet, and formulation/diet (2100-2200 calories/day). The 31 overweight participants (BMI = 25-29) formed a fourth (no diet) treatment group. All participants received two daily doses of the formulation or placebo and remained on a normal or calorie-controlled diet for 8 weeks. RESULTS: At the end of the trial period, statistically significant net reductions in weight and central obesity, as well as in fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein were observed in participants who received the formulation, regardless of diet. CONCLUSION: Cissus quadrangularis formulation appears to be useful in the management of weight loss and metabolic syndrome.

African researchers recently evaluated the weight loss effects of a formulation consisting of cissus quadrangularis, soy albumin, green tea extract, chromium, and B-vitamins. Overweight subjects were provided with the formulation and either given no dietary advice or a diet that was restricted in calories. In addition there was a placebo group. After 8 weeks:

The placebo group lost 4.4 pounds
The formula group with no dietary advice lost 14.5 pounds
The formula group with caloric restriction lost 17.8 pounds

Both formulations groups also lost significantly more body fat and had greater reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and C-ractive protein. These results are preliminary, but show promising weight loss and metabolic improvements with a formulation containing cissus quadrangularis and green tea extract as the main ingredients.

Oben J, Kuate D, Agbor G, Momo C, Talla X. The use of a Cissus quadrangularis formulation in the management of weight loss and metabolic syndrome. Lipids Health Dis. 2006 Sep 2;5:24.

This recent publication is a more extensive follow-up study of the previous Cissus and Green Tea study. This report showed greater weight loss and improvements in health markers with a cissus quadrangularis formulation. The same group of African researchers conducted a larger study to confirm a previous investigation consisting of a formula of cissus quadrangularis, soy albumin, green tea extract, chromium, and B-vitamins in overweight subjects. (THE POST ABOVE) They also examined the effects of cissus quadrangularis alone to show the independent weight loss effects without the other ingredients in the formula. Participants were supplemented with the following for 6-8 weeks:

    Placebo group
    Cissus quadrangularis (300 mg/day)
    Cissus quadrangularis formulation

The placebo group had no change in body weight, whereas the cissus alone group lost 10.6 pounds and the cissus formulation lost 18.8 pounds. The findings confirmed the results of their previous study showing an impressive weight loss using a cissus and green tea extract formulation. Since weight loss was slightly less in the cissus alone group, it seems the green tea and other nutrients work in synergy to produce weight loss.

Cissus quadrangularis, a medicinal plant indigenous to Asia and Africa, is used for many ailments, especially for the treatment of hemorrhoid. The effects associated with hemorrhoid, i.e. analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities as well as the venotonic effect of the methanol extract of C. quadrangularis (CQ) were assessed in comparison with reference drugs. In the analgesic test, CQ provoked a significant reduction of the number of writhes in acetic acid-induced writhing response in mice. CQ also significantly reduced the licking time in both phases of the formalin test. The results suggest peripheral and central analgesic activity of CQ. In acute phase of inflammation CQ elicited the inhibitory effect on the edema formation of the rats' ear induced by ethyl phenylpropiolate as well as on the formation of the paw edema in rats induced by both carrageenin and arachidonic acid. It is likely that CQ is a dual inhibitor of arachidonic acid metabolism. In addition, CQ exerted venotonic effect on isolated human umbilical vein similarly to the mixture of bioflavonoids, i.e. 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin. The results obtained confirmed the traditional use of C. quadrangularis for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with hemorrhoid as well as reducing the size of hemorrhoids.

Gastroprotective effect of Cissus quadrangularis extract in rats with experimentally induced ulcer.
Jainu M, Vijai Mohan K, Shyamala Devi CS.

Department of Biochemistry, University of Madras, Chennai, India. malsleo80@yahoo.co.in

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Most of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin cause gastric ulcer. In order to study the gastroprotective effect of Cissus quadrangularis extract (CQE), this study was undertaken on aspirin-induced ulcerogenesis in pyloric ligated (ASP-PL) model in rats. METHODS: To assess the possible antiulcer effect of CQE, lesion index, gastric secretions glycoprotein levels, non-protein sulphydryls (NPSH) and adherent mucus content were determined in ASP-PL induced gastric mucosal injury in rats. RESULTS: Pretreatment with CQE significantly prevented the gastric mucosal lesion development and decreased the gastric toxicity produced by ulcerogen. In addition, ulcerated rats showed depletion of gastric wall mucus, glycoproteins and NPSH levels whereas treatment with CQE reverted this decline in ASP-PL induced rats. Histological studies confirmed the results. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The present finding suggests that CQE promotes ulcer protection by the decrease in ulcer index, gastric secretions and increase in the glycoprotein level, gastric mucin content and NPSH concentration. CQE may protect the gastric mucosa against ulceration by its antisecretory and cytoprotective property.

The objective of this research was to analyse the gastroprotective effect of Cissus quadrangularis extract (CQE) along with its mechanism underlying the therapeutic action against the gastric mucosal damage induced by aspirin. In this study, we investigated the effect of CQE on the course of experimentally induced gastric ulcer by analyzing the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), microvascular permeability, activity of nitric oxide synthase-2 (NOS-2), mitochondrial antioxidants, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. A significant increase in vascular permeability, NOS-2 activity, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta levels and oxidative damage were noted in aspirin administered rats. Pretreatment with CQE (500 mg/kg bw/day) by oral gavage for 7 days significantly attenuated these biochemical changes caused by aspirin in rats. Tissue damage was showed by decreased levels of glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and an associated rise in lipid peroxidation (LPO) in mitochondria, which were reversed by CQE. In addition, CQE prevents oxidative damage of DNA by reducing DNA fragmentation indicating its block on cell death. Ulcer protection in CQE treated rats was confirmed by histoarchitecture, which was comprised of reduced size of ulcer crater and restoration of mucosal epithelium. Thus, reduced neutrophil infiltration, antiapoptotic and antioxidant action have a pivotal role in the gastroprotective effect of CQE.

Attenuation of neutrophil infiltration and proinflammatory cytokines by Cissus quadrangularis: a possible prevention against gastric ulcerogenesis.
    Jainu M, Shyamala Devi CS.

Department of Biochemistry, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Reactive oxygen species, neutrophil infiltration and proinflammatory cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of gastric ulcers caused by aspirin. The present study demonstrates the healing effect of Cissus quadrangularis extract (CQE) through inhibitory action on generation of lipid peroxidation, proinflammatory cytokines and neutrophil infiltration. The concentration ofmalondialdehye (MDA), protein carbonyl content, conjugated dienes, mucosal (SH) sulphydryls, uric acid, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and activities of myeloperoxidase (MPO), xanthine oxidase (XO) and antioxidative enzymes were determined in the gastric mucosa. Administration of CQE significantly attenuated the gastric lesions induced by aspirin and this was accompanied by the rise in uric acid, antioxidative enzymes, SH groups, and a significant decrease in lipid peroxidase, TNF-alpha, MPO and XO activities. These findings suggest that the significant gastroprotective activity could be mediated by the antioxidant activity as well as by the attenuation of oxidative mechanism and proinflammatory cytokines.

Protective effect of Cissus quadrangularis on neutrophil mediated tissue injury induced by aspirin in rats.

Department of Biochemistry, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai 600025, India.

Cissus quadrangularis (family: Vitaceae) is well known for the treatment of gastric disorders in traditional medicine, owing to its rich source of carotenoids, triterpenoids and ascorbic acid, and has received considerable attention regarding its role in human nutrition. In the search of new potential antiulcer agents, the present study evaluated the ethanol extract of Cissus quadrangularis (CQE) against the gastric toxicity induced by aspirin in rats. The optimum protective dose of 500 mg/kg of extract was selected by the pretreatment of gastric ulcers with different doses of CQE (250, 500 and 750 mg/kg) for 7 days which showed ulcer protection by 40, 71.2 and 72.6%, respectively, as compared to ranitidine (RTD) (30 mg/kg) by 71.9% in the aspirin model. In addition, results have shown that administration of aspirin increases lipid peroxidation status, xanthine oxidase (XO), myeloperoxidase and decrease in selenium-glutathione peroxidase activities in the gastric mucosa, resulting in mucosal damage at both cellular and subcellular level. Pretreatment with CQE ameliorated the observed effect significantly in the gastric mucosa of ulcerated rats. These findings suggest that the gastroprotective activity of CQE could be mediated possibly through its antioxidant effect as well as by the attenuation of the oxidative mechanism and neutrophil infiltration.

Effect of Cissus quadrangularis on gastric mucosal defensive factors in experimentally induced gastric ulcer-a comparative study with sucralfate.
    Jainu M, Devi CS.

Department of Biochemistry, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai, India.

Cissus quadrangularis is an indigenous plant commonly mentioned in Ayurveda for treatment of gastric ulcers. The ulcer-protective effect of a methanolic extract of C. quadrangularis (CQE) was comparable to that of the reference drug sucralfate. Further, gastric juice and mucosal studies showed that CQE at a dose of 500 mg/kg given for 10 days significantly increased the mucosal defensive factors like mucin secretion, mucosal cell proliferation, glycoproteins, and life span of cells. The present investigation suggests that CQE not only strengthens mucosal resistance against ulcerogens but also promotes healing by inducing cellular proliferation. Thus, CQE has potential usefulness for treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

Ethanol extract of Cissus quadrangularis was evaluated for its anti-osteoporotic activity in ovariectomized rat model of osteoporosis at two different dose levels of 500 and 750 mg/kg per day. Healthy female albino rats were divided into five groups of six animals each. First group was sham operated and served as control. All the remaining groups were ovariectomized. Group 2 was fed with equivolume of saline and served as ovariectomized control. Groups 3-5 were orally treated with Raloxifen (5.4 mg/kg) and ethanol extract of Cissus quadrangularis (500 and 750 mg/kg), respectively. The findings assessed on the basis of biomechanical, biochemical and histopathological parameters showed that the ethanol extract of the plant had a definite antiosteoporotic effect.

Cell Biotechnology Department, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore 570 013, India.

Extracts of Cissus quadrangularis L. were tested for antioxidant activity by beta-carotene linoleic acid model and also by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl model. The ethyl acetate fraction of both fresh and dry stem extracts at a concentration of 100 ppm showed 64.8% antioxidant activity in the beta-carotene linoleic acid system and 61.6% in the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl system. This fraction showed the presence of sterols, vitamin C, and tannins as phytoconstituents. The antioxidant activity of methanol extract and aqueous extract were comparatively less significant than that of ethyl acetate extract, and n-hexane extract showed the least activity. The ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract of both fresh and dry stems further exhibited antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus species. The results of the study have implications in the use of C. quadrangularis as an antibacterial agent and more so as an antioxidant in several applications requiring these properties.

    Abstract:
The current study was performed to evaluate the effect of the methanol extract of Cissus quadrangularis (L.) (CQE) against free-radical damage. The test extract exhibited significant scavenging effect on DPPH free radical, superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical production, and inhibition of lipid peroxide production in erythrocytes. The free-radical scavenging effect of CQE was comparable with that of reference antioxidants. The activities of liver marker enzymes and antioxidant defense enzymes in rat liver homogenate were assessed in CCl 4 - and CQE-treated animals. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) caused a significant increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), malondialdehyde (MDL) levels and a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione- S -transferase (GST), and reduced glutathione (GSH) activities, which were reverted by CQE treatment. The results obtained suggest that CQE showed antilipid peroxidative, free-radical scavenging property and ameliorated the liver damage by an increase in antioxidant enzymes activities. It can be concluded that the free-radical scavenging/antioxidant activity of the plant extract may be responsible for the therapeutic action against tissue damage.

There's an extreme conflict of interest here.

After digging around, I found that Julius Oben, the lead researcher, is actually employed at Gateway Health Alliances Inc, which supplies all the testing materials (and probably funds) the study: http://www.naymz.com/search/julius/oben/1413447 They've hired him as the "Chief Scientific Officer". How's that for impartial.

In addition, Oben holds a patent on Cissus' use as a weight loss aid: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...S=PN/7,175,859 Oben is the "inventor" and Gateway Health Alliances is the assignee. Apparently Oben and Gateway Health Alliances have been working together since as early as 2000.

In 2006, Oben published a similar study "The use of a Cissus quadrangularis formulation in the management of weight loss and metabolic syndrome". In that study he used a different product from Gateway Health Alliances called Cylaris. It was a mixture of several ingedients including cissus. Of course, it had amazing results, results that Gateway Health Alliances relies on heavily in their marketing: http://www.cylarisweightloss.com/

This doesn't mean that Oben's research is necessarily bogus, but can you tell me why an American corporation is having an obscure university in a poor West African country do the research on their products, while simultaneously employing the lead reseacher? Smells like bad fish to me.

    Good find!

I have seen such things more than once. if i remember correctly, similar conflicts of interest occured also in some studies on CLA and on HMB (if I am not mistaken - it's been some time).

As it was already said, such conflicts of interest do not imply that such studies are necessarily bad. but they are definitively biased.

I know of several specific cases where a substantial number of studies on certain pharmaceutical drugs that showed not favorable results were "hidden" or thrown away into the rubbish basket while only a handful of selected studies with better results were published.
and then, when you search in pubmed and find 5 studies all of which are somewhat positive you will get an overall positive impression of the investigated drug. but if you knew that there are 10 more studies that were all negative....
I found a document that raises claims about the legitimacy of the journal that the cissus/Cylaris studies were posted in (Lipids in Health and Disease). It can be found here: http://www.retailing.org/new_site/do...s_decision.doc

    To quote the paper:
    Quote:
Also, this study was published in an on-line journal that was purportedly peer reviewed and available without subscription or payment for individual papers.
    Quote:
The challenger also informed ERSP that studies were published only in an online journal and its description as a "peer reviewed journal" is highly circumspect due to its anonymous, on-line submission of potential peer reviewers, the significant processing fee and the relatively short time (i.e., 50 days) between submission to a journal and publication.
    Quote:
In rebuttal to the criticism of Iovate's peer reviewed study, the marketer asserted that the Journal in which the study appeared is an open access, peer reviewed, online journal that publishes articles on all aspects of lipids, including a synthesis of new lipid compounds and their role in health and disease.
    Something else to think about.

I haven't read the full document and don't know much about this specific journal. a first good indicator is that it is at least listed in pubmed. the bad thing is that it is not (yet?) listed in the Isiweb database, so there is no official impact factor listing. I wonder why. when did the journal start?

let me make some general notes:

a processing time of 50 days is fast, but nothing out of order. I have seen faster publication times. generally, a short time between submission and publication speaks for a well organized reviewing and publication system and is a strong point that speaks in favour of a journal. there is nothing more annoying for an author when he submits a manuscript and then has to wait 6 or even 9 months until some sleepy reviewers find the time to review it.

second, the fact that it is an online journal makes it not at all bad. there are some excellent "online only" journals with high impact factors and scientific reputation.

third, peer-reviewing is in most cases anonymous!!! of course, the reviewers are known to the publisher / editor (lol).

None of the quoted points make negative implications about the journal.

As I have already said, I don't know how well or bad the editors of this journal do their job. maybe it's crap, maybe it's according to standards.
Maybe someone else has a really substantial and concrete critique but the above mentioned things are not at all suitable to make someone even raise an eyebrow.

    Αναλγητικό; δηλαδή απλά δε νιώθεις το πόνο ή κάνει καλά τις αρθρώσεις (έστω κατά ένα μικρό ποσοστό);
